How does one small Waikato town recycle nearly all its consumer waste?

Residents in the North Island beachside town of Raglan recycle 76% of all their waste.

How do they do it?

Through kerbside sorting, dedicated recycling and a public education campaign.

Locals can drop their rubbish off, sort it themselves, or leave it on the kerbside to be collected.

"There's four elements to the project - social, cultural, economic and environmental. So many people support one of thos elements or all four of those elements."

It's all run by Xtreme Zero Waste - they employ 28 people, and turn over $1.5 million a year.

"They like to see locals employed and running on the back of a truck, or they enjoy to think that reducing plastic and recycling actually improves the environment."

It says New Zealanders can all recycle more - so our rubbish doesn't go to waste.
