Summer is the perfect season for picnics so this year reporter Caitlin Wallace aims to explore some of North Waikato's perfect picnic spots.

Pulling up to the Waikato Esplanade stretch in Ngaruawahia and finding the perfect picnic spot was easy.

On a warm sunny Friday at midday, I shook off my neglected tartan patterned blanket and set up my lunch for one.

The view out to the Waikato River and Turangawaewae Marae is stunning

For under $10 I managed to get enough ingredients for a salami and salad bun, a deliciously ripe peach and a broccoli salad.

With foods to match the season I was onto a winner whilst I looked out across the Waikato River with Turangawaewae Marae as a backdrop.

The birds chirped, wind prompted the surrounding trees to dance with the faint sound of a weed whacker giving off that summer vibe.

Nothing but good food and a good view makes for a relaxing time for Waikato times reporter, Caitlin Wallace. Ngaruawahia, Waikato district, NZ

Nearby a man had set up a makeshift bed under a large tree with its accommodating shade.

Seemed to be the perfect spot for a nap.

A few walkers passed through with a friendly hello from one.

It's the personal touches that let you know it is a unique spot. Ngaruawahia, Waikato district, NZ

The esplanade was the perfect little getaway in our own backyard.

While I did drive down there, if you happened to be in town it's a reasonable walking distance if you wanted to pick some lunch up and soak up some vitamin D.

Working in an office most of the week, a change of scenery felt nice, especially with such a beautiful view.
