Nestled amongst the shops in Gordonton is a revelation. The Mandarin Tree Art and Concept Store.
Here you’ll find perfect portraits that pierce your soul.
Brushstrokes evoking a thousand emotions.
Intricate sculptures inspired by imagination.
The Mandarin Tree offers a beautifully lit inside gallery and a scintillating backyard with a corokia hedge teacup and saucer sitting proudly at the rear.
Now you might be excused for passing the shop by. It sits unassuming alongside a local vet and a dairy, but to surpass the shop before you exit Gordonton would be a tragedy.
Sculptures, jewellery, greeting cards, multimedia and photographic genius adorns the walls and displays. Ceramic delights perfect for a gift or two. Knitted wares, wall hangings, prints and graphic enchantments all awaiting you to help furnish your abode.
The proprieter Claudia Aalderink, an artist and photographer, hosts the artwork of over 100 New Zealand artists so no matter what your recipients preference is, there will be an artwork at The Mandarin Tree to suit.
Originally from Kihikihi, Claudia started The Mandarin Tree in 2012 as a collective place ‘where creativity can find its way out’. The art gallery in Gordonton was established in 2014 and sells 100% NZ made art. The Mandarin Tree is a platform for artists nationwide.

Whether you’ve driven past it once, or a hundred times, each time you do is a travesty. The art is fresh with new pieces arriving almost daily. When you stop in Gordonton to pick up a coffee at The Firepot Café, you must take an amble down toward The Mandarin Tree to admire the art on display.
The Mandarin Tree is located 10 minutes from Hamilton on the State Highway 1B road at 1035 Gordonton Road, Gordonton. Take the morning off to explore the gallery and see more of what Gordonton has to offer.
