The Ministry of Business, Indicators, Innovation and Employment Regional Tourism Estimates indicates that visitor expenditure in the Waikato district has grown from $75 million in 2009 to $85 million in 2015.

The majority of visitor expenditure in the district is from domestic visitors from Auckland and the wider Waikato region.


In 2015, visitors from Auckland accounted for approximately $22 million of expenditure in the district. Visitors from around the Waikato region spent approximately $34 million in the district.

Guest Nights

The Statistics New Zealand Accommodation Survey records the number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month. Guest nights in the Waikato region are at a record high.
