The number of Free Independent Travellers (FIT's) visiting the Waikato district is increasing. This market is of particular interest as these visitors are likely to travel around, rather than through, the district. FIT visitors are typically those hiring campervans and caravans as well as friends and family, particularly from Australia. They also include Chinese visitors in New Zealand for a short time.

Guest Nights

The Statistics New Zealand Accommodation Survey records the number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month. Guest nights in the Waikato region are at a record high.
